Bharat Bandh called for tomorrow, July 9, 2025 (Wednesday): Read details!

Bharat bandh

A joint platform of 10 central trade unions, along with various farmers’ and rural workers’ organizations, has called for this nationwide general strike. Over 25 crore workers across India are expected to participate.

Key Reasons for the Bharat Bandh:

The unions are protesting against what they term as “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-national pro-corporate policies of the government.” Their demands and criticisms include:

  • Opposition to New Labour Codes: They allege that the four labour codes passed by Parliament are designed to weaken trade unions, increase working hours, dilute workers’ rights to collective bargaining and strike, and decriminalize violations of labour laws by employers.
  • Privatization and Casualization: Strong opposition to the privatization of public sector enterprises, outsourcing, and the increasing casualization of the workforce.
  • Unemployment and Economic Policies: Concerns over rising unemployment, especially among youth, increasing prices of essential commodities, wage depression, and reduced social sector spending (education, health, welfare).
  • Unmet Demands: They highlight the government’s alleged failure to address a 17-point demand charter submitted last year and the lack of an annual Indian Labour Conference for a decade.
  • Government’s Alleged Corporate Bias: Accusations that the government has abandoned its welfare state status and is prioritizing corporate interests.

Sectors Expected to be Affected:

Disruptions are anticipated across several major industries and services:

  • Banking and Financial Services: While banking unions haven’t issued a separate strike notice, organizers expect employees from public and cooperative banks to participate, potentially affecting branch operations, cheque processing, and customer support.
  • Postal Services: Likely to be impacted.
  • Coal Mining and Factories: Operations may be affected.
  • State Transport Services: Public buses, taxis, and app-based cab services could face disruptions or delays in some regions due to protests and road blockades. Commuters are advised to plan ahead.
  • Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and Government Departments: Workers from various public sector units and government departments are expected to join.
  • Electricity Supply: Some reports suggest over 27 lakh power workers may join, potentially affecting electricity supply.
  • Farmers and Rural Workers: The Samyukta Kisan Morcha and agricultural workers’ unions are supporting the bandh and plan large-scale mobilizations in rural areas.

What is Expected to Remain Open:

  • Schools and Colleges: Generally expected to remain open, but local transport disruptions might affect attendance.
  • Private Offices: Likely to stay open, though employee attendance could be impacted by commuting difficulties.
  • Hospitals and Emergency Services: Expected to function normally, although road access to these services might be temporarily disrupted in protest areas.
  • Markets and Shops: Generally expected to remain open unless local circumstances dictate otherwise.
  • Rail Services: As of now, there is no official announcement of a nationwide railway strike, but localized delays or disruptions are possible due to protests or blockades in certain regions.
  • Metro and Airports: Expected to operate as usual.

It’s advisable for citizens to stay updated with local news and traffic advisories for July 9, 2025, to plan their commutes and activities accordingly.
