New Delhi | July 2025 – As the holy month of Sawan (Shravan) begins, preparations are in full swing for one of the largest religious pilgrimages in the world – the Kawad Yatra 2025.
Every year, during this sacred month, millions of Shiva devotees known as Kawariyas embark on a journey to fetch holy water from the Ganges River and offer it to Shiva Lingams in their local or regional temples. This is not just a spiritual journey – it’s a test of physical endurance, mental faith, and communal unity.

The Story Behind Kawad Yatra
The origin of Kawad Yatra can be traced back to the Samudra Manthan episode in Hindu mythology. During the churning of the cosmic ocean, Halahala (a deadly poison) emerged which threatened to destroy all existence. To save the universe, Lord Shiva drank the poison, holding it in his throat, which turned blue — earning him the name Neelkanth.
According to ancient stories, to ease the burning sensation caused by the poison, devotees fetched holy water from the Ganga and offered it to Lord Shiva’s Shivling. This act evolved into the present-day Kawad Yatra.
