MUMBAI, India – July 19, 2025
Before “Mogambo Khush Hua” became synonymous with Amrish Puri’s legendary villainy, another acclaimed actor was originally slated to breathe life into the menacing character in Shekhar Kapur’s 1987 blockbuster, Mr. India. Veteran actor Anupam Kher has repeatedly revealed that he was the initial choice for Mogambo, a role he even began shooting for, before ultimately being replaced.
Kher’s recent candid admissions on various platforms, including a podcast with Raj Shamani and earlier interviews, shed light on the primary reason behind his unexpected exit: a significant difference in creative vision between him and director Shekhar Kapur.
A Clash of Creative Visions
According to Anupam Kher, he had a distinct idea of how Mogambo should be portrayed. Kher envisioned the character as more “Machiavellian” – cunning, sly, and manipulative. He believed his performance would have been less “stiff” than what eventually made it to the screen.
“Me and Shekhar had a different idea for the character; he would’ve been more Machiavellian,” Kher stated in a recent interview. He also admitted to feeling “belittled, hurt, and jealous” at the time of his removal, questioning why he had been “fired” from such a prominent project. Kher even shared that he had filmed for “a month or two” before the decision was made to replace him.
The Arrival of a Legend: Amrish Puri as Mogambo
While the decision to replace him was undoubtedly painful for Anupam Kher, the role ultimately landed in the lap of the late, great Amrish Puri. Puri’s portrayal of Mogambo, with his booming voice, menacing laugh, and the iconic catchphrase “Mogambo Khush Hua,” transcended the film and cemented his place as one of Indian cinema’s most memorable villains.
Despite his initial feelings of disappointment and jealousy, Anupam Kher has, with characteristic grace, acknowledged the brilliance of his successor. He has often stated that after watching Mr. India upon its release and witnessing Amrish Puri’s powerful performance, he realized that the filmmakers had made the “right decision” by casting Puri.
Shekhar Kapur, too, has spoken about the evolution of the Mogambo character, and it’s clear that the synergy between his directorial vision and Amrish Puri’s unparalleled screen presence resulted in a cinematic icon that continues to resonate with audiences decades later.
The incident remains a fascinating piece of Bollywood lore, highlighting how crucial creative alignment is in filmmaking and how, sometimes, a change in casting, even if initially difficult, can lead to cinematic magic.
