MANCHESTER, Old Trafford – July 27, 2025 – In a display of grit, resilience, and tactical batting, India successfully batted out Day 5 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, securing a remarkable draw and keeping the five-match series alive at 2-1 in England’s favour. Centuries from Captain Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar were instrumental in thwarting England’s victory charge.
Coming into the final day needing to survive 90 overs with 8 wickets in hand, India faced a daunting task after being forced to follow on, having conceded a mammoth 311-run first-innings lead to England. The hosts had posted a colossal 669 all out in their first innings.
The day began precariously for India, with overnight centurion Shubman Gill (103) departing early to Jofra Archer, followed by KL Rahul (90) falling to a determined Ben Stokes. With India still trailing by a significant margin and Rishabh Pant unavailable to bat due to injury sustained on Day 1, fears of a collapse loomed large.
However, a magnificent partnership between Ravindra Jadeja (100) and Washington Sundar (100)** turned the tide decisively. The left-handed duo exhibited exceptional composure and skill against a probing English attack on a fifth-day pitch. They not only erased the deficit but built a substantial lead, frustrating England’s bowlers and captain Ben Stokes, who was seen battling a shoulder injury while bowling.
The partnership extended through the afternoon and into the evening session, with both Jadeja and Sundar bringing up well-deserved centuries – Jadeja’s fifth in Tests and Sundar’s maiden Test ton. Their unbroken stand of over 200 runs solidified India’s position, making an English victory impossible.
As the final session wore on, England captain Ben Stokes controversially offered a handshake to signal a draw with over 15 overs still remaining in the day. However, Jadeja and Sundar, eyeing their individual milestones and perhaps aiming to further demoralize the opposition, declined the offer, much to the visible surprise and frustration of the English team. They continued to bat on, reaching their centuries before the teams eventually shook hands, settling for the draw.
While Ben Stokes was awarded the Player of the Match for his sensational 141 in England’s first innings, the day belonged to India’s resilient batting. The draw means India head into the fifth and final Test at The Oval with a chance to level the series.
