Her Experience
The woman, who uses apps to book autos for work, chose Ola after her usual app had no autos available. A few minutes into the ride, the driver suddenly stopped. He said his phone was not working to see the way. But the woman later found out he had secretly ended the trip on the app during this stop. This meant the app was no longer tracking them.
Soon after, the driver turned onto a road that felt completely wrong. “Alarm bells started ringing in my head,” she wrote, seeing that the road looked very different from her usual way. A sign showed they were going in the opposite direction of her office, towards an area that was two hours away – a trip that usually takes only 30-45 minutes.
She quickly told the driver to turn back, but he kept saying, “madam, this is what Google Maps is showing.” The auto was moving fast on big roads, so she couldn’t just get out.
Luckily, her partner was alert. When she quickly texted him what was happening, he called her right away. She gave her phone to the driver, and her partner loudly told him to turn back. After a lot of arguing, and the woman even thinking about jumping out, her partner’s angry words finally made the driver take her back near her home.
The most shocking part was that the driver did not ask for any money. “He didn’t charge a single rupee when I got off. He just sped off,” she said. This made her and her partner sure that he was trying to kidnap her. “This guy almost took me across state borders,” she added.
The woman felt very upset and shaken. She tried to complain to Ola, but found that the app had “ZERO safety features” for such a problem. “You literally CAN’T EVEN COMPLAIN. They just tell you to call the police!” she wrote, pointing out how the company has no way to help in these serious situations.
This incident is not alone. Recently, police reports in Delhi and nearby areas have shown other cases where auto drivers have acted badly, including alleged kidnapping attempts. For example, a teen girl in Thane recently saved herself from a similar situation by using a compass and jumping out of a moving auto.
Delhi Woman’s Scary Auto Ride – What Other People Said Online:
The woman’s story touched many people. On Reddit, users shared their shock and relief, saying things like, “This is horrifying!” and “Damn that’s so scary…” Many advised her to report the incident to the police and to complain to Ola on social media sites like X.
Some users also shared their own scary experiences and offered advice:
- One person suggested carrying house keys to use for safety if needed.
- Others said it’s good to talk loudly on the phone about your route or keep Google Maps on speaker. This can make the driver think someone else is listening.
- Many agreed with the woman’s advice to use the metro for traveling alone.
- There was a lot of talk about not trusting Ola, with comments like “Ola is the worst” and how the app needs better safety features.
Important Safety Tips from the Victim:
Based on her scary experience, the woman shared key tips for people traveling alone, especially women using autos and cabs:
- Think Twice Before Booking Alone: It’s best to avoid booking autos or cabs alone if you can, as you can’t always know the driver.
- Match The Auto Number: Always check if the auto number on the app is the same as the actual vehicle’s number. If not, do NOT get in.
- Wait for Ride Start: Only get into the auto after the driver puts in your unique code (OTP) and the trip actually starts on the app.
- Keep App Open: Always keep the ride app open on your phone so you can see if the driver ends the trip early.
- Share Your Location: Always tell someone you trust where you are going and share your live location.
- Sit Safely: Sit on the side of the auto that is open, in case you need to get out quickly.
- Know Your Route: Only book rides if you know the way well. It’s too risky in unknown areas.
- Check Google Maps: Always keep an eye on Google Maps to make sure the driver is going the right way.
- Look for Police: Be aware of police on the road in case you need help.
- Avoid Ola (Strong Advice): The woman strongly advised against using Ola due to her bad experience with its safety and complaint system.
This worrying event highlights the strong need for ride-hailing companies to have better ways to check drivers, track rides closely, and offer clear ways for passengers to complain and get help when they are in danger.
